Towards Contactless, Low-Cost and Accurate 3D Fingerprint Identification Abstract: In order to avail the benefits of higher user convenience, hygiene, and improved accuracy, contact less 3D fingerprint recognition techniques have recently been introduced. One of the key limitations of these emerging 3D fingerprint technologies to replace the conventional 2D fingerprint system is their bulk and high cost, which mainly results from the use of multiple imaging cameras or structured lighting employed in these systems.
This paper details the development of a contact less 3D fingerprint identification system that uses only single camera. We develop a new representation of 3D finger surface features using Finger Surface Codes and illustrate its effectiveness in matching 3D fingerprints. Conventional minutiae representation is extended in 3D space to accurately match the recovered 3D minutiae. Multiple 2D fingerprint images with varying illumination profile acquired to build 3D fingerprints can themselves be used recover 2D features for further improving 3D fingerprint identification and has been illustrated in this paper.
The experimental results are shown on a database of client fingerprints and confirm the advantages of the single camera based 3D fingerprint identification. Article :. DOI: Need Help?
Adermatoglyphia: Barriers to Biometric Identification and the Need for a Standardized Alternative
Dermatoglyphics form a vital portion of mass data collection, biometric scrutiny, and verification. The scenario can be extremely debilitating for the adermatoglyphia patients, especially when the condition is permanent or irreversible. This article reviews different causes of adermatoglyphia, the challenge it poses to biometric identification, and the potential substitute modalities for fingerprinting technology. These modalities can function as a backup program for biometric surveillance in both medical and non-medical settings under circumstances when the fingerprinting method fails to comply. Fingerprinting describes the technical aspects of recording the skin ridge pattern present on fingertips, establishing one of the key components of human identification.
Sign up today for your free subscription to the Forensic Teacher! During the school year I started teaching a 9-week course on Forensic Science as one of our 8th grade activity classes. A brief outline is available in PDF format - Quarter Outline and a list of supplies is available at the bottom of this page. Listed below are the powerpoints, worksheets, and other resources I use during the class. I have a SmartBoard in my classroom and many of the presentations unit and review are set up so students can help me fill in the answers as we discuss the notes or while they check their worksheets. Please e-mail me if you have any questions. The cards are printed on card stock back-to-back and laminated for student use.

S Adebisi. The Internet Journal of Biological Anthropology. The science of fingerprints — dermatoglyphics - had long been widely accepted, and well acclaimed and reputed as panacea for individualization, particularly in forensic investigations. Nonetheless, the occasional errors in identification that at times bedevil the practice had been raising alarms and skepticism and the possible discontinuity of its acceptance. In spite of this, while no yet any parallel or other equally acceptable diagnostic methods of personal identification exist at present, relentless efforts in scientific advancements are ongoing to make fingerprint a most reliable and errorless human identification reference point.
Our fingerprints make us unique, they set us apart from others, and no two people have the same set of fingerprints, including identical twins. The reason that everyone has a different set of fingerprints is the developing fetus is exposed to environmental conditions in the womb such as movement and different pressures and composition of the amniotic fluids that cause the formation and development of original ridges in the fingerprints. The individual journey we each take as a developing fetus creates our unique fingerprints and the countless environmental factors of movement, and different positions in the womb, and time in certain positions is different for each person. This is the scientific reason that no two people have the exact same fingerprints. Fingerprints are the genetic signature of a person, and fingerprints will not naturally change overtime.
