While the Wittgensteinian arguments about family resemblance are arguments against essentialism, Aristotle's arguments are a defence of essentialism. The difficulties in his doctrine of homonymy are difficulties in his general views about real essences.

Aristotle provided a complex synthesis of the various philosophies existing prior to him. It was above all from his teachings that the West inherited its intellectual lexicon , as well as problems and methods of inquiry. As a result, his philosophy has exerted a unique influence on almost every form of knowledge in the West and it continues to be a subject of contemporary philosophical discussion.

He was a specialist on the work of the Greek philosopher Aristotle. After returning to England, he taught philosophy at the University of Oxford and moved to a chair at Harvard University in His final appointment was the Laurence Professorship of Ancient Philosophy at the University of Cambridge , which he held from until his death in One of the leading philosophers of his generation, Owen published numerous papers on Aristotle's metaphysics and ontology. Although most of his work focussed on Aristotle, he also wrote an influential article on Plato 's Timaeus The central theme of his scholarly work was to demonstrate the importance of method and argument over dogmatism in ancient philosophy.

Owen has returned to some of the same problems he dealt with earlier in a different context in his famous essay on "Logic and Metaphysics in Some Earlier Works of Aristotle. The general comments on this topic which Owen makes would deserve a long discussion. Here I shall comment on a couple of points only. There is little in De Soph. However, Owen's claim seems to fly in the face of what we find in the Metaphysics and in the Analytics.
The article discusses three current interpretations of this terminology. These are drawn along the lines of, respectively, modal-existential ontological dependence, essential ontological dependence, and grounding or metaphysical explanation.
