Internal combustion engines provide outstanding drivability and durability, with more than million highway transportation vehicles in the United States relying on them. Along with gasoline or diesel, they can also utilize renewable or alternative fuels e.

Four-stroke engine

The chapter presents the application of variable compression ratio VCR technology for an internal combustion engine. An eccentric shaft-based sliding mechanism has been used for changing position of engine cylinder head assembly. By ensuring a high stiffness of the engine layout together with additional sliding mechanism, the combustion chamber volume of the engine can be changed precisely without changing the displacement of the cylinders. In result, the engine compression ratio can be continuously varied during normal engine operation from the value of down to The desire to limit the adverse external effects associated with the development of motorization and transport, mainly based on the reciprocating internal combustion engine as the primary power source, reveals primarily with limitation the allowable level of emissions of harmful substances in the exhaust gases, that is, carbon monoxide, CO; hydrocarbons, HC; nitrogen oxides, NOx; and particulate matter, PM. Moreover, in the perspective of growing global warming phenomenon and dropping resources of liquid fuels, particular attention is paid to the reduction of fuel consumption and thus CO 2 emission. Unfortunately, the physical and chemical rules of working processes in piston engines do not allow to meet all the above requirements in a simple manner.

Internal Combustion Engine Basics

Internal combustion engines generally employ reciprocating motion, although gas turbine , rocket, and rotary engines are examples of other types of internal combustion engines. Reciprocating internal combustion engines are the most common, however, and are found in most cars, trucks, motorcycles, and other engine-driven machines. The most basic components of the internal combustion engine are the cylinder, the piston, and the crankshaft. To these are attached other components that increase the efficiency of the reciprocating motion and convert that motion to the rotary motion of the crankshaft. Fuel must be provided into the cylinder, and the exhaust, formed by the explosion of the fuel, must be provided a way out of the cylinder. The ignition, or lighting, of the fuel must also be produced. In the reciprocating internal combustion engine, this is done in one of two ways.

Internal Combustion Engine Basics

A four-stroke also four-cycle engine is an internal combustion IC engine in which the piston completes four separate strokes while turning the crankshaft. A stroke refers to the full travel of the piston along the cylinder, in either direction. The four separate strokes are termed:. Nicolaus August Otto was a traveling salesman for a grocery concern.

Internal combustion engines ICE are the most common form of heat engines , as they are used in vehicles, boats, ships, airplanes, and trains. They are named as such because the fuel is ignited in order to do work inside the engine. This can be done using a piston called a reciprocating engine , or with a turbine. Raising the temperature of a gas increases the pressure that makes the gas want to expand. When heat is added to the system, it forces gas inside to expand.
