Globalizing International Relations

The idea of international relations IR as a social science is represented in many ways in IR literature. Another issue of contention is whether there is any intrinsic distinction between natural and social sciences. The issue has recently been studied by various communities of IR scholars around the world, and the field is becoming more pluralistic in regard to this question. In this bibliography, we provide an overview of the historical background of claims to science in IR scholarship, of different assumptions about the nature of theory and appropriate research questions and methods, and of the impact of scientific IR scholarship in the production of international politics writ large. The British scientist and novelist C. In a seminal statement on the British classical approach, Bull advocated humanities, international law, and history as a foundation for the study of international relations.

International Relations Theories

It is time for International Relations IR to join the relational revolution afoot in the natural and social sciences. To do so, more careful reflection is needed on cosmological assumptions in the sciences and also in the study and practice of international relations. Building a conversation between relational cosmology, developed in the natural sciences, and critical social theory, this book seeks to develop a new perspective on how to think relationally in and around the study Building a conversation between relational cosmology, developed in the natural sciences, and critical social theory, this book seeks to develop a new perspective on how to think relationally in and around the study of IR. This chapter focuses on the major debates within International Relations theory with regard to the philosophy of social sciences. The philosophy of social science has played a key role in the formation, development, and practice of IR as an academic discipline. Issues concerning the philosophy of social science are frequently described as meta-theoretical debates. Meta-theory primarily deals with the underlying assumptions of all theory and attempts to understand the consequences of such assumptions on the act of theorizing and the practice of empirical research. The chapter first provides an historical overview of the philosophy of social science in IR before discussing both the implicit and explicit roles played by meta-theoretical assumptions in IR.

International Relations and Social Science

This article looks at how the discipline of international relations should develop over the next twenty years. International relations should move toward being a truly international field, rather than being a field for one, dominant, part of humanity. It needs to understand the world of the powerless as well as the powerful, and be self-reflective as to the relationship between our scholarship, our stated ethical standards, and our location as scholars. Keywords: international relations , pluralism , scholarship , intellectual approaches , common identities.
