Inorganic Pollutants into Groundwater: From Geochemistry to Treatment

The Kopaida plain is a cultivated region of Eastern Greece, with specific characteristics related to the paleogeographic evolution and the changes in land use of the area. This study examines the geochemical conditions of the groundwater and soil, and the correlations between them. Extended chemical analyses were carried out including the assessment of 28 parameters for groundwater and 13 for soil samples. The results revealed that groundwater geochemistry is influenced primary by natural processes such as the geological background, and secondary by manmade impact mainly deriving from the extended use of Nitrogen-fertilizers and the over-exploitation of boreholes. Soil geochemistry is influenced exclusively by natural processes, such as weathering of the prevailing geological formations.

Most people in Bengkalis island use groundwater as their primary resource, but brackish water discovered in the wells located near the shore as well as in the distance. A hydrogeology study through geochemistry and isotope aspect conducted for the first time to identify the effect of saltwater intrusion SWI on groundwater. Most of the groundwater samples from dug wells indicating the weak acid exceeding strong acid. Meanwhile, the groundwater samples from bore wells dominated by alkalis exceeding alkaline earth. SWI analysis shows From isotope analysis, the groundwater samples found to be originated from the higher elevation or distance source. Meanwhile, there are lighter 2H values in the samples that are indicating the groundwater flown in the deeper part of the aquifer.

Water Supply 1 June ; 20 4 : — Thirty five groundwater samples were collected and analysed for various parameters. Hydrogeochemical evolution visualized with the Gibbs diagram showed that the groundwater is mainly controlled by water—rock interactions. Factor analysis on the other hand identified three major groups of geochemical constituents and showed that weathering and anthropogenic inputs are the dominant factors controlling groundwater chemistry in the study area. Groundwater is generally recharged by rainwater.

Potentially harmful elements such as antimony Sb , arsenic As , chromium Cr , cobalt Co , copper Cu , fluorine F , nickel Ni , uranium U and others, can reach high concentrations in the natural water systems, becoming extremely dangerous for both the environment and human health. Despite the fact that these elements can also originate from anthropogenic sources, their origin from geogenic sources is dominant by far. Their release, mobility, and fate highly vary in each geological setting due to different hydrogeochemical conditions which occur during the water-rock interaction processes. Although the features of these harmful contaminants are widely discussed, some of these are poorly studied. In this regard, the main goal for the scientific community is to understand the environmental issue using geochemical approaches in order to develop efficient remediation systems.
