Wetsteniospublished the engraved plates of images fromTheatrum universale omnium Animalium in two volumes, with Latin texts on the natural history of the animalsby Heinrich Ruysch a professor of botany and medicine and John Johnston also a medical doctor , each of whom.

The work was dividedinto six main sections, depicting fish, birds, quadrupeds, mollusks and crustaceans, terrestrial and aquaticinsects, and snakes. The authors developed theircategories prior to the immense labor of classifying theknown varieties of animals accomplished by theeighteenth-century Swedish botanist and medical doctorwidely known by the Latinized form of his name, CarolusLinnaeus.

Thus, some of the groupings differ from modernpractice. Some of the creatures portrayed were drawnfrom life, others from specimens preserved in severalcollections. The actual species shown included manynative to Africa, the Americas, and Asia, as well as thosefamiliar in Europe. Descriptions of the mythicalcreatures portrayed were derived from ancient andmedieval accounts. These imaginary beasts include twogriffins, a phoenix, a unicorn, a harpy with a masculinehead, a mermaid and a merman, a hydra-headed monster, ahorned rabbit, dragons, basilisks, and sea monsters.

The Latin labels provided for the creatures depictedin the engraved plates of the edition have beenpreserved in this volume. To aid reference toillustrations of both real and imaginary animals, anindex of common names has been provided. Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry.
