Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow

By day the lass, [End Page ] as she's referred to throughout, roams the palace, uncovering the secrets of the enchantment, and by night she shares her darkened bedchamber with a stranger. Unable to contain her curiosity, the girl breaks the rules and lights a candle to look at her bedmate, dooming him to marry a troll princess unless she can win him back. Superb and seamless additions to the story include Rollo, the lass' protective pet wolf, and Hans Peter, her heartsick oldest brother, who has a sad secret of his own. In a clever twist, the young woman's experience is not isolated; instead, she is one in a long line of inquisitive females failing to keep their word and fighting to keep their princes. George has a knack for storytelling, and she is at her best when describing her fully imagined world of ice bears, fauns, gargoyles, and selkies. This entry has a sarcastic kick, and while some of the humor initially seems out of place in the setting, the protagonist's wry comments are sure to generate laughter.

Blessed—or cursed—with an ability to understand animals, the Lass has always felt estranged from her family, who struggle to make a living in the windswept north. But the great white bear is not what he seems, nor is his castle. Long years ago, when I was a wee lass, I developed a bizarre passion for Norway. My family is actually of Danish descent, but for me it was Norway or nothing. The breathtaking landscape, the thought of Viking ships cresting icy waves, polar bears and reindeer, it all seemed so romantic and fascinating to me. I devoured anything about Norway I could find: I wore itchy wool sweaters if they had a Norwegian pattern on them. I ate cold salmon which I do like.

And when an isbjorn polar bear seeks her out, and promises that her family will become rich if only the Lass will accompany him to his castle, she doesn't hesitate. But the bear is not what he seems, nor is his castle, which is made of ice and inhabited by a silent staff of servants. Only a grueling journey on the backs of the four winds will reveal the truth: the bear is really a prince who's been enchanted by a troll queen, and the Lass must come up with a way to free him before he's forced to marry a troll princess. I'm torn. I seriously cannot decide which of the three retellings of East of the Sun West of the Moon was the best. All three had unique bits and pieces and details which set them apart and all three were written beautifully. This one had an old setting like East and a similarly enchanting prose. The female main character was a gutsy lass who raced against the odds and ice to rescue her white bear.

I'm tempted to knock a star off my rating for that, but my enjoyment for the book overall is still a solid 5. The love story isn't the driving plot of this novel—the story actually has a little bit of substance in the form of mystery, strong characters, and a bit of Norwegian folklore as well as a hint of Beauty and the Beast. Despite being a retelling of another story, it wasn't a direct parallel of fairy tales I am familiar with, which made the story much more rewarding because it wasn't annoyingly predictable. I love me a strong female lead who doesn't need her prince charming to charge in and save the day.
