Phenomenology (philosophy)

Brentano became particularly influential in teaching his students such as Carl Stumpf, Anton Marty, Alexius Meinong, and Edmund Husserl his descriptive psychology, which is concerned with mind as intentionally directed at objects. As Brentano and his students continued in their investigations in descriptive psychology, another side of Austrian phenomenology, namely object theory, became more and more prominent. The philosophical orientation under consideration in this collection of essays is accordingly a two-sided discipline, concerned with both mind and objects, and applicable to various areas of philosophy such as epistemology, philosophy of language, value theory, and ontology. Phenomenology

We discuss four interconnected issues that we believe have hindered investigations into how language may affect thinking. These have had a tendency to reappear in the debate concerning linguistic relativity over the past decades, despite numerous empirical findings. The second is the argument that it is impossible to disentangle language from culture in general, and from social interaction in particular, so it is impossible to attribute any differences in the thought patterns of the members of different cultures to language per se. The third issue is the objection that methodological and empirical problems defeat all but the most trivial version of the thesis of linguistic influence: that language gives new factual information. We analyze these claims and show that the first three do not constitute in-principle objections against the validity of the project of investigating linguistic influence on thought, and that the last one is not the best way to frame the empirical challenges at hand. While we do not argue for any specific theory or mechanism for linguistic influence on thought, our discussion and the reviewed literature show that such influence is clearly possible, and hence in need of further investigations. The two related questions if and how language affects the mind go back to the dawn of contemplative thought.

It then spread to France , the United States , and elsewhere, often in contexts far removed from Husserl's early work. Phenomenology is not a unified movement; rather, different authors share a common family resemblance but also with many significant differences. Gabriella Farina states:. A unique and final definition of phenomenology is dangerous and perhaps even paradoxical as it lacks a thematic focus. In fact, it is not a doctrine, nor a philosophical school, but rather a style of thought, a method, an open and ever-renewed experience having different results, and this may disorient anyone wishing to define the meaning of phenomenology.

Phenomenology represents a detailed and systematic attempt to understand the structures of first person lived experience.

Phenomenology is the study of structures of consciousness as experienced from the first-person point of view. The central structure of an experience is its intentionality, its being directed toward something, as it is an experience of or about some object. An experience is directed toward an object by virtue of its content or meaning which represents the object together with appropriate enabling conditions.

The relevance of Husserl’s phenomenological exploration of interiority to contemporary epistemology

Phenomenology , a philosophical movement originating in the 20th century, the primary objective of which is the direct investigation and description of phenomena as consciously experienced, without theories about their causal explanation and as free as possible from unexamined preconceptions and presuppositions. The word itself is much older, however, going back at least to the 18th century, when the Swiss German mathematician and philosopher Johann Heinrich Lambert applied it to that part of his theory of knowledge that distinguishes truth from illusion and error. But even this new phenomenology included so many varieties that a comprehensive characterization of the subject requires their consideration. In view of the spectrum of phenomenologies that have issued directly or indirectly from the original work of the German philosopher Edmund Husserl , it is not easy to find a common denominator for such a movement beyond its common source.

In analytic philosophy , philosophy of language investigates the nature of language , the relations between language, language users, and the world. Gottlob Frege and Bertrand Russell were pivotal figures in analytic philosophy's " linguistic turn ". In continental philosophy , language is not studied as a separate discipline. Rather, it is an inextricable part of many other areas of thought, such as phenomenology , structural semiotics , [3] hermeneutics , existentialism , deconstruction and critical theory.

Беккер отлично знал, что в Испании только одна церковь - римско-католическая. Католицизм здесь посильнее, чем в самом Ватикане. - У нас, конечно, не все его тело, - добавил лейтенант.  - Solo el escroto. Беккер даже прервал свое занятие и посмотрел на лейтенанта. Solo el escroto. Он с трудом сдержал улыбку.

Language may indeed influence thought

Analytic philosophy is a branch and tradition of philosophy using analysis which is popular in the Western World and particularly the Anglosphere , which began around the turn of the 20th century in the contemporary era and continues today.
