Effective and Sustainable Hydraulic Fracturing. Hydraulic fracturing has received abundant media attention in recent years due to a rapid increase in the use of the technique in combination with horizontal drilling technology to produce oil and gas resources from tight reservoirs. Hydraulic fracturing techniques are also used in a variety of other applications that are unrelated to oil and gas production, including tunnel and dam construction, enhanced geothermal energy, carbon sequestration, groundwater remediation, block cave mining, rock burst mitigation, and water well development.

With the introduction of hydraulic fracturing technology, the United States has become the largest natural gas producer in the world with a substantial portion of the production coming from shale plays. In this review, we examined current hydraulic fracturing literature including associated wastewater management on quantity and quality of groundwater. Furthermore, Underground Injection Control UIC requirements under SDWA should be extended to hydraulic fracturing operations regardless if diesel fuel is used as a fracturing fluid or not.

Hydraulic Fracturing: Paving the Way for a Sustainable Future?

The American Ground Water Trust recognizes the national importance of developing energy supply from the huge inventory of geologic resources that occur in many parts of the US. We believe that the techniques used to bring fossil fuels to the surface should cause no damage to the environment. In addition, the storage, handling, and treatment of fuels, chemicals and process water, and the transport of extracted fuels by truck or pipeline, should be undertaken in ways that minimize disruption to communities, and do not jeopardize surface or groundwater resources. We need sustainable uncontaminated water and the development of fossil energy. We can have both, provided science, technology, common sense, regulatory oversight and caution are applied during exploration, development, operation and closure.

The NEB has regulatory responsibilities for oil and gas exploration and production activities, including the drilling, completion, hydraulic fracturing and formation flow testing of, and production from onshore unconventional reservoirs under the Canada Oil and Gas Operations Act COGOA Footnote 1 and its regulations. The purpose of COGOA, among other things, is to promote safety, protection of the environment and the conservation of oil and gas resources. These Filing Requirements outline the information the Board will need to assess future applications for drilling that involve hydraulic fracturing.
