Dinka Youth and the Culture of Formal Schooling in Postconflict South Sudan

The Dinka are one of the largest ethnic groups in the Republic of Sudan. They belong to a group of cultures known as the Nilotic peoples, all of whom live in the southern Sudan. In , a civil war erupted in the Sudan, pitting the largely Arab and Muslim northern Sudan against the black African peoples of the south. Lasting into the s, the war has had dire consequences for the Dinka and other Nilotic peoples. Tens of thousands of Dinka have died; countless others have become refugees. Rebel groups and international human rights organizations have accused the Sudanese government of attempting genocide against extermination of the Dinka.

This chapter discusses the reconstruction of state-run formal schooling in a conflict-affected community of Dinka agro-pastoralists in South Sudan and looks at the ways in which adolescent school children are engaged in simultaneously reproducing, transforming, and creating new cultural practices around education. The recent expansion of formal schooling into the more isolated regions of Africa—and Asia—has often arrived on the heels of international humanitarian interventions in response to natural disasters and war, and is highly driven by the international legitimation of education as a human right and the standardization of education in emergencies Andina It has been argued that state schools are modernizing institutions that have the power to transform indigenous life. African religions , religious beliefs and practices of the peoples of Africa. In fact, Africa is a vast continent encompassing both geographic variation and tremendous cultural diversity. Each of the more than 50 modern countries that occupy the continent has its own particular history, and each in turn comprises numerous ethnic groups with different languages and unique customs and beliefs. African religions are as diverse as the continent is varied. Nevertheless, long cultural contact, in degrees ranging from trade to conquest, has forged some fundamental commonalities among religions within subregions, allowing for some generalizations to be made about the distinguishing features of religions indigenous to Africa. With the exception of the influence of Christianity on New Religious Movements in Africa, religions that were introduced to Africa from elsewhere, such as Islam and Christianity , are not covered in this article.

The Religion of the Dinka. T spread over the period A generous gift from my: college in Cambridge, Downing College, enabled me to make essential preparations, but the study itself was entirely financed by the Sudan Government, and this book is now published with its support. It would be difficult to imagine a Government which provided happier conditions for disinterested research than the Government of the Sudan, and I cannot here thank all those to whom I am indebted. For some indeed, like the la:ie Chief Kuanyin Agoth and the late Dr. Mamoun Hussein el Sherif, these acknowledgements have been too long delayed. Of the many officials who gave me hospitality, I can mention only those in whose homes I was most frequently a visitor: Mr.

Era un punqui, - ответила Росио. Беккер изумился. - Un punqui.
