Introduction and Contents
The katana sword appears in many folk tales as well as legends. This piece of Japanese history not only appears in old folklore, it is also very popular in modern fiction as well as contemporary art pieces such as film and theater. The katana has reached far and wide in the world of fictional stories and can be used to tell tales of wisdom and bravery or evil and treachery. The sword can be seen not only as a tool for the hero but also a tool for the villain. Many legends surround Japanese swords, the most frequent being that the blades are folded an immense number of times, gaining magical properties in the meantime. While blades folded hundreds, thousands, or even millions of times are encountered in fiction, there is no record of real blades being folded more than around 20 times.

Also the historical sources and records are often more or less divided but this was mentioned when required for the understanding of a certain handed down legend.
Japanese swords and their rich individual histories have fascinated people for centuries. Swords were first used as weapons in the Tumulus Period 3rd century. Swords seen in the Asuka and Nara Periods were called chokuto, or straight sword, a name that reflects their use for thrusting rather than slashing. The evolution of what was to become the classic Japanese katana the world has come to know began in the Heian Period , which saw a surge in the demand for swords due to the many internal conflicts that took place during that period, the most famous of which is perhaps the clash between the Genji and Heike Clans known as the Genpei Kasen.
