Then they will become acquainted with the difficulties experienced by European empires in the 19th century leading to the process of decolonization and formation of new states in Africa and South America.
In addition, by studying Portuguese history, students will also become familiarized with 20th-century European history, in particular with forms of nationalism, republicanism, dictatorship, and fascism experienced during the period.
Course Objectives The purpose of this course, beyond the communication of factual material concerning the history of Portugal and of its empire, is to encourage students to acquire a set of analytical skills that will help them over the course of their education.
These skills include the capacity to read texts closely, to consider them in light of historical contexts, and to write clearly, succinctly, and coherently about them. World Ready Credits This course may be used to meet the World Ready requirement if the student focuses on a country or geographical region s where the language in question, taught at UML, is the primary language for the major product of the course. Students engage in substantive research and produce a major product that focuses on their linguistic area.
