Hall-Effect Sensors Theory and Applications by Edward Ramsden

A Hall-effect sensor or simply Hall sensor is a device to measure the magnitude of a magnetic field. Its output voltage is directly proportional to the magnetic field strength through it. The sensor type is named after the American physicist Edwin Hall. Hall-effect sensors are used for proximity sensing , positioning , speed detection , and current sensing applications. Frequently, a Hall sensor is combined with threshold detection, so that it acts as and is called a switch. Commonly seen in industrial applications such as the pictured pneumatic cylinder , they are also used in consumer equipment; for example, some computer printers use them to detect missing paper and open covers.

The Hall-effect principle is named for physicist Edwin Hall. In he discovered that when a conductor or semiconductor with current flowing in one direction was introduced perpendicular to a magnetic field a voltage could be measured at right angles to the current path. The common analogy popular at the time of Hall's discovery was of electric current in a wire to a flowing liquid in a pipe. Hall's theory equated the magnetic force on the current resulting in a crowding to one side of the "pipe" or wire. Electromagnetic field theory has allowed a more refined interpretation of the physics responsible for the Hall effect. It is well established that the Hall-effect results from the interaction of charged particles, like electrons, in response to electric and magnetic fields. And also on Wikipedia.

When an electron moves along a direction, v, perpendicular to the applied magnetic field, B, it experiences a force, F, the Lorentz force, that is normal to both the applied field and the current flow. The Hall effect and the Lorentz force. The blue arrows, B, represent a magnetic field passing perpendicularly through the conductive plate. In response to this force, the electrons move in a curved path along the conductor and a net charge, and therefore a voltage, develops across the plate.

Hall Effect Sensing and Application

Hall voltage is discovered by Edwin Hall in Hall Effect is caused due to the nature of current in a conductor. Many inventions used this Hall Effect theory. Hall-effect sensors are the linear transducers that are used to measure the magnitude of the magnetic field. Working on the principle of Hall Effect, these sensors generate a Hall voltage when a magnetic field is detected, which is used to measure the magnetic flux density.

Although the Hall effect sensor is a magnetic field sensor, it can be used as the principle component in many other types of sensing devices (current, temperature.
