ECHOcommunity represents a vast network of agriculture and community development practitioners around the world. The sharing of information is a core value in this community of practice. We believe that in sharing knowledge, people are empowered to find, test, and improve available solutions. In order to facilitate this, ECHOcommunity makes available resources produced internally, and those shared by network members.

Common animal diseases and their management

Anhrax, a highly infectious and fatal disease of cattle, is caused by a relatively large spore-forming rectangular shaped bacterium called Bacillus anthracis. Anthrax causes acute mortality in ruminants. The bacteria produce extremely potent toxins which are responsible for the ill effects, causing a high mortality rate. Signs of the illness usually appear 3 to 7 days after the spores are swallowed or inhaled.

For Eye worms - see under Eye problems. The acute form of the disease is more common in sheep than in cattle. The sub- acute or chronic form of the disease is more common in cattle, but also occurs in sheep and can cause death in both. It is the result of activity of the adult flukes in the bile ducts, causing anaemia and protein leakage. Acute fluke infestation usually kills younger animals, especially sheep.

Certain parasites, such as horn flies, Haematobia irritans L. Diptera: Muscidae , and biting midges, Culicoides spp. Diptera: Ceratopogonidae , a vector of bluetongue virus, are restricted to lower elevations. However, some parasites are endemic to high elevations, such as the Rocky Mountain wood tick, Dermacentor andersoni Stiles Acari: Ixodidae , a vector of many diseases. Multiple horse fly and mosquito species persist at various elevation gradients, with some having preference for lower or higher elevations.

A parasite is an organism that lives in another organism, called the host, and often harms it. It depends on its host for survival. Without a host, a parasite cannot live, grow and multiply. For this reason, it rarely kills the host, but it can spread diseases, and some of these can be fatal. Parasites, unlike predators, are usually much smaller than their host and they reproduce at a faster rate. Parasites vary widely. Around 70 percent are not visible to the human eye, such as the malarial parasite, but some worm parasites can reach over 30 meters in length.

Tropical diseases are diseases that are prevalent in or unique to tropical and subtropical regions. However, many were present in northern Europe and northern America in the 17th and 18th centuries before modern understanding of disease causation. The initial impetus for tropical medicine was to protect the health of colonial settlers, notably in India under the British Raj. These insects may carry a parasite, bacterium or virus that is infectious to humans and animals. Most often disease is transmitted by an insect "bite", which causes transmission of the infectious agent through subcutaneous blood exchange. Vaccines are not available for most of the diseases listed here, and many do not have cures. Human exploration of tropical rainforests , deforestation , rising immigration and increased international air travel and other tourism to tropical regions has led to an increased incidence of such diseases to non-tropical countries.

Metrics details. Despite growing awareness of the importance of controlling neglected tropical diseases as a contribution to poverty alleviation and achieving the Millennium Development Goals, there is a need to up-scale programmes to achieve wider public health benefits. This implementation deficit is attributable to several factors but one often overlooked is the specific difficulty in tackling diseases that involve both people and animals - the zoonoses. The key considerations included: a the general lack of reliable quantitative data on their public health burden; b the need to evaluate livestock production losses and their additional impacts on health and poverty; c the relevance of cross-sectoral issues essential to designing and implementing public health interventions for zoonotic diseases; and d identifying priority areas for research and interventions to harness resources most effectively.
