The poem, A Dialogue Between the Soul and Body by Andrew Marvell describes the conflict between the human body and the human Soul, each attributing its troubles and sufferings to the other. The Soul feels that it is a prisoner inside the Body while the Body feels that the Soul is a tyrant imposing all kinds of restraints and restrictions upon the Body. The Soul wishes that the Body should die so that the Soul can go back to heaven, its original abode. The Body, in turn, holds the Soul responsible for all the sins that the Body commits. All sins, says the Body, are the results of the many and conflicting emotions which the Soul experiences.

Like Harold Bloom and John Pilling, O'Hara takes the autobiographical essays seriously, as more than material useful for elucidation of the poems and plays; Tragic Knowledge deserves our attention. Spurred by his attempt to "incorporate both phenomenological description and critical interpretation within an open-ended dialectical hermeneutic of imaginative restoration" p.

On this basis, Tragic Knowledge makes a positive contribution to our understanding of Yeats's artistry. Nevertheless, as my resistance to O'Hara's use of "Autobiography" and my reiteration of "Autobiographies" surely Indicate, I find his book open to criticism even in its remarkably cogent attempt to trace the emergence of an increasingly self-critical Irony in Yeats's text.

The meditative method Yeats employs in his autobiographical writing "is a form of self-interpretation, in which the mind dwells upon its own antithetical arrangements of the minute particulars of experience" p. In short, O'Hara concludes, Yeats himself becomes "the writer as tragic hero, the artist as a martyr to the craft of his art, who desires, as in 'Ego Dominus Tuus,' an ideal reader to interpret to him the otherwise indecipherable characters of his life.

That is, Yeats desires to become his own perfect reader, and to tell his life to himself" p. This argument goes a long way toward explaining away the surface discontinuities in Yeats's autobiographical essays, and O'Hara supports it with analysis which is sensitive both to details and to the larger rhetorical patterns at work in the Autobiographies. This famous statement by W. Yeats reflects the appeal of his most powerful poems. I was brought up on Yeats, particularly the early poetry and the drama, so, in one sense, his work feels as if it were part of my DNA. On the other hand, I find many of his ideas antipathetic, offensive or just plain daft, and I have no wish to immerse myself in them. I have read many demolitions of his romantic ideas about big houses and the role of the aristocracy as well as articles challenging his status as an Irish writer, given his Protestant Ascendancy background, and these have flavoured my attitude over the years. Rereading him now, I recognise that he belongs indisputably, wilfully and complicatedly, to Irish history and culture; I recognise also the heights of sheer brilliance he reaches in language; finally, I recognise and respond to the element of struggle which runs through so much of his poetry but which is perhaps most apparent in his later work.

Like a presidential debate, this dialogue is a hostile, mud-slinging, pull-no-punches argument between two very upset beings: the soul and the body. Although they're both unhappy about the same thing being alive together , they express themselves in different ways. The soul is unhappy about the physical pain of being inside a body, forced to live next door to arteries and livers and to feel every ache and pain. What it really wants is the body's death. Well-known for being one of the first renowned English metaphysical poets of his time, Andrew Marvell was also a satirist and politician. Having travelled through continental Europe, he seemed to have mastered four languages that included French, Italian and Spanish. Marvell was known for his sly use of words disguised in his poems to denote his ideals and views in the metaphysical nature. The poem by the metaphysical poet Andrew Marvell is about the internal fight between the controversies that the body and the soul face amongst each other. Each states their own predicaments and wants the destruction of the other.
