Coagulopathy

A bleeding disorder is a condition that affects the way your blood normally clots. The clotting process, also known as coagulation, changes blood from a liquid to a solid. Sometimes, certain conditions prevent blood from clotting properly, which can result in heavy or prolonged bleeding. Bleeding disorders can cause abnormal bleeding both outside and inside the body. Some disorders can drastically increase the amount of blood leaving your body. Others cause bleeding to occur under the skin or in vital organs, such as the brain. For blood to clot, your body needs blood proteins called clotting factors and blood cells called platelets.

Hemophilia is a rare disorder in which your blood doesn't clot normally because it lacks sufficient blood-clotting proteins clotting factors. If you have hemophilia, you may bleed for a longer time after an injury than you would if your blood clotted normally. Small cuts usually aren't much of a problem. If you have a severe deficiency of the clotting factor protein, the greater health concern is deep bleeding inside your body, especially in your knees, ankles and elbows. That internal bleeding can damage your organs and tissues, and may be life-threatening.

Bleeding Disorders

Normally, if you get hurt, your body forms a blood clot to stop the bleeding. For blood to clot, your body needs cells called platelets and proteins known as clotting factors. If you have a bleeding disorder, you either do not have enough platelets or clotting factors or they don't work the way they should. Bleeding disorders can be the result of other diseases, such as severe liver disease or a lack of vitamin K. They can also be inherited. Hemophilia is an inherited bleeding disorder.

Several blood tests are used to find out why the blood does not clot normally Picture 1. Your child may have one or more of these tests:. This test is used as a screening test to evaluate bleeding disorders. It measures the number of seconds it takes for a fibrin clot to form in a blood sample. Fibrin is the major protein that maintains a clot. Several substances are added to the sample. Then it is examined to see whether certain factors are missing.

Bleeding Disorders

Many people who have or have had family members with hemophilia will ask that their baby boys get tested soon after birth. About one-third of babies who are diagnosed with hemophilia have no other family members with the disorder. A doctor might check for hemophilia if a newborn is showing certain signs of hemophilia. Diagnosis includes screening tests and clotting factor tests. Screening tests are blood tests that show if the blood is clotting properly.

When tissues are injured, blood cell fragments called platelets gather at the wound, providing a foundation for coagulation clotting. Platelets are bound together by a glue-like protein named von Willebrand factor. Once the initial platelet plug is built, clotting factors gather at the injury site to seal the wound, stop bleeding, and begin the healing process. The clotting factors work in a carefully timed sequence, resulting in a sturdy clot and healed wound. Bleeding problems can result from diseased platelets or clotting factor abnormalities.

Coagulopathy also called a bleeding disorder is a condition in which the blood's ability to coagulate form clots is impaired. Of note, coagulopathies are sometimes erroneously referred to as "clotting disorders"; a clotting disorder is a predisposition to clot formation thrombus , also known as a hypercoagulable state or thrombophilia. Coagulopathy may cause uncontrolled internal or external bleeding.
