Edit: Please note that it's the 4th edition redbox. I'm sorry for confusing you and making me seem like some cool veteran. Free and legal. It's enough to get you started and playing, but doesn't have character creation or levelling up, just the mechanics. Remember I'm an ultra noob. Heck though, I'll work with it if you recommend it.
Ah, okay. So you're using the 4th edition "Essentials" kit, then? Well, sadly they haven't made PDFs of that available yet, and on principle I'm less inclined to go looking for pirated versions of current products.
You can download the quick start rules pdf for free, but they don't include any of the character creation rules. I suggest picking up a copy of the paperback Rules Compendium. It has all the most up-to-date core rules in a single book. Wizards of the Coast doesn't sell pdfs of the 4E player's handbook, or any 4E rules book for that matter.
Do I have any alternative to buying a whole new box? I want to be able to run that first basic adventure with my friends and then work our way up once we're comfortable. Do you mean that you are missing the Player's Guide that comes with the box? Or do you mean the actual Players Handbook core rulebook?
Because you can totally just buy a Players Handbook. They used to sell the PDFs on Paizo but have since discontinued them. I'm not sure where you can get them these days. I like labrynth lord which gives their book away from free sans artwork as a downloadable pdf. Did you buy it new? Contact WotC and explain the situation. They'll probably ship you a replacement. I think it might also come with four or five character sheets. The Player's and DM's books both only cover enough to run the adventure, with the Player's book covering character creation and some advancement and the DM's book covering the adventure and rules.

You might try that even if you didn't buy it new. I really dislike the new Red Box for this reason. What came in the box?
How much do you have to spend? Next time I just won't help.

Learning the game has never been so easy! Several different character races dwarf, elf, halfling, and human and classes cleric, fighter, rogue, and wizard are presented, along with powers for each race and class. Note: This PDF edition does not include the tokens, cards or dice that were included in the printed box version of this title. It was published in September About the Cover. Instead, it's a one-time introduction to the game. About the Components.
A lot of the old 3. To that end, I wondered how much 4e stuff was still available for free on WotC's site. Here's what I found, with direct links to download from their servers. NOTE ON I haven't linked to any of the player character materials: paragon paths, playtests, templates, etc. I think these are ridiculous.
Adventurer's Vault 1. Adventurer's Vault 2. Arcane Power.

Is there a chance that Wizards of the Coast would ever remake that set for people to try out?
