Professional Reference articles are designed for health professionals to use. You may find the Common Postoperative Complications article more useful, or one of our other health articles. NICE has issued rapid update guidelines in relation to many of these. This guidance is changing frequently. Postoperative complications may either be general or specific to the type of surgery undertaken and should be managed with the patient's history in mind. Common general postoperative complications include postoperative fever, atelectasis, wound infection, embolism and deep vein thrombosis DVT.
Pre & Post Operative Care of Appendicectomy
Preoperative care refers to health care provided before a surgical operation. The aim of preoperative care is to do whatever is right to increase the success of the surgery. At some point before the operation the health care provider will assess the fitness of the person to have surgery. This assessment should include whatever tests are indicated , but not include screening for conditions without an indication. Immediately before surgery the person's body is prepared, perhaps by washing with an antiseptic , and whenever possible their anxiety is addressed to make them comfortable.
This can be education about practically anything, but most commonly: pain management, bowel management, physical restrictions, medication side effects… the list goes on. Education is essential to the patient and can vary quite dramatically depending on their individual needs. In terms of the surgical patient, some of the most important education we provide is preoperative education before surgery. The goal of preoperative education is to not only prepare the patient for surgery but also to prepare them for what to expect following the surgery. Therefore, it can be quite extensive.

Pre-operative and Post-operative Instructions
The perioperative period is a term used to describe the three distinct phases of any surgical procedure, which includes the preoperative phase, the intraoperative phase, and the postoperative phase. Every surgery is broken down into these phases to differentiate tasks and establish who is responsible for overseeing and delivering each stage of care. By maintaining a strict adherence to procedures and a clear chain of command, hospital teams are able to deliver consistent, optimal care from the moment a surgery is ordered to the time when a person is fully recovered. The initial phase, called the preoperative phase , begins with the decision to have surgery and ends when the patient is wheeled into surgery. This phase can be extremely brief, such as in the cases of acute trauma, or require a long period of preparation during which time a person may be required to fast, lose weight, undergo preoperative tests, or await the receipt of an organ for transplant.
Postoperative care is the care you receive after a surgical procedure. The type of postoperative care you need depends on the type of surgery you have, as well as your health history. It often includes pain management and wound care. Postoperative care begins immediately after surgery. As part of your postoperative care, your healthcare provider should teach you about the potential side effects and complications of your procedure.
