The main threats to human health from heavy metals are associated with exposure to lead, cadmium, mercury and arsenic.

Long-term exposure to arsenic in drinking-water is mainly related to increased risks of skin cancer, but also some other cancers, as well as other skin lesions such as hyperkeratosis and pigmentation changes. JT The 5 metals of particular concern in relation to harmful effects on health are mercury, lead, cadmium, tin and arsenic, but there are others too. Recent data indicate that adverse health effects of cadmium exposure, primarily in the form of renal tubular damage but possibly also effects on bone and fractures, may occur at lower exposure levels than previously anticipated.

Heavy metals

Water pollution by heavy metals has many human origins, such as the burning of fossil fuels, exhaust gases of vehicles, mining, agriculture, and incineration of solid and liquid wastes. Heavy metals also occur naturally, due to volcanoes, thermal springs activity, erosion, infiltration, etc. This water contamination is a threat for living beings because most heavy metals are toxic to humans and to aquatic life. Hence, it is important to find effective techniques for removing these contaminants in order to reduce the level of pollution of the natural waters. In this work, we have reviewed the toxicity of several heavy metals mercury, lead, cadmium, chromium, nickel , their impact on the environment and human health, and the synthesis and characterization methods of conducting organic polymers COPs utilized for the removal of heavy metals from the environment. We have also stressed the great interest of COPs for the removal of toxic heavy metals from waters.

The Journal publishes articles on basic or clinical research relating to nephrology, arterial hypertension, dialysis and kidney transplants. It is governed by the peer review system and all original papers are subject to internal assessment and external reviews. The journal accepts submissions of articles in English and in Spanish languages. The Impact Factor measures the average number of citations received in a particular year by papers published in the journal during the two receding years. CiteScore measures average citations received per document published.

Heavy metals are generally defined as metals with relatively high densities , atomic weights , or atomic numbers. The criteria used, and whether metalloids are included, vary depending on the author and context. More specific definitions have been published, but none of these have been widely accepted. The definitions surveyed in this article encompass up to 96 out of the known chemical elements ; only mercury , lead and bismuth meet all of them. Despite this lack of agreement, the term plural or singular is widely used in science. The earliest known metals—common metals such as iron , copper , and tin , and precious metals such as silver , gold , and platinum —are heavy metals.

Heavy Metal Poisoning

Heavy metals are are elements that are naturally found in the earth. Your body even naturally contains some. You might be exposed to high concentrations of these metals from food, air or water pollution, as well as medicine, food containers with improper coating, industrial exposure, or lead-based paint.

A diagnosis of heavy metal poisoning in sheep living on pastures in the vicinity of a smelting facility in the Wumeng mountain area of China was based on laboratory tests and clinical symptoms. Furthermore, heavy metal contamination in the food chain was found to have a deleterious effect on the health of local residents. The levels of copper Cu , zinc Zn , cadmium Cd , and lead Pb in irrigation water, soil, forages, and animal tissues were measured in samples taken from the vicinity of a smelting facility and control samples. Heavy metal contents in food corn, rice, and wheat , as well as in human tissues blood and hair obtained from local residents were also determined.
