Bible: The Old Testament

God prepared this earth as a home for His children. Adam and Eve were chosen to be the first people to live on the earth see Moses ; They were to be the first parents. He was chosen by our Heavenly Father to lead the righteous in the battle against Satan see Revelation —9. Adam and Eve were foreordained to become our first parents.

When Adam and Eve were placed in the Garden of Eden, they were not yet mortal. There was no death. They had physical life because their spirits were housed in physical bodies made from the dust of the earth see Moses ; Abraham They had spiritual life because they were in the presence of God. They had not yet made a choice between good and evil. God commanded them to have children.

God told them they could freely eat of every tree in the garden except one, the tree of knowledge of good and evil. He tempted her to eat of the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Eve yielded to the temptation and ate the fruit. When Adam learned what had happened, he chose to partake also. The changes that came upon Adam and Eve because they ate the fruit are called the Fall.

What physical and spiritual changes occurred in Adam and Eve as a result of their transgression? Because Adam and Eve had eaten the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, the Lord sent them out of the Garden of Eden into the world.

Their physical condition changed as a result of their eating the forbidden fruit. As God had promised, they became mortal. They and their children would experience sickness, pain, and physical death.

Because of their transgression, Adam and Eve also suffered spiritual death. This meant they and their children could not walk and talk face to face with God. Adam and Eve and their children were separated from God both physically and spiritually. How does the Fall provide opportunities for us to become like our Heavenly Father? Some people believe Adam and Eve committed a serious sin when they ate of the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

However, latter-day scriptures help us understand that their Fall was a necessary step in the plan of life and a great blessing to all of us. Because of the Fall, we are blessed with physical bodies, the right to choose between good and evil, and the opportunity to gain eternal life.

None of these privileges would have been ours had Adam and Eve remained in the garden. And all things which were created must have remained in the same state in which they were after they were created. Why do you think it is important to know about the Fall and how it influences us?

Make Your Own List. Who were Adam and Eve, really? Over many centuries, the origin story has undergone countless transformations. The Pulitzer Prize-winner and Harvard professor Stephen Greenblatt chooses five books that explore the history of Adam and Eve, and tells us why the world isn't ready to leave the narrative of Eden behind. We know it comes from somewhere in the near East, but its origins are earlier than any records we have.

The Book of Genesis opens the Hebrew Bible with the story of creation. God, a spirit hovering over an empty, watery void, creates the world by speaking into the darkness and calling into being light, sky, land, vegetation, and living creatures over the course of six days. God places the two people, Adam and Eve, in the idyllic garden of Eden, encouraging them to procreate and to enjoy the created world fully, and forbidding them to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Eve shares the fruit with Adam, and the two are immediately filled with shame and remorse. While walking in the garden, God discovers their disobedience. After cursing the serpent, he turns and curses the couple. Adam is cursed to toil and work the ground for food.

The Fall of Adam and Eve

God prepared this earth as a home for His children. Adam and Eve were chosen to be the first people to live on the earth see Moses ; They were to be the first parents.

Satan having compast the Earth, with meditated guile returns as a mist by Night into Paradise, enters into the Serpent sleeping. Adam and Eve in the Morning go forth to thir labours , which Eve proposes to divide in several places, each labouring apart: Adam consents not, alledging the danger, lest that Enemy, of whom they were forewarn'd , should attempt her found alone: Eve loath to be thought not circumspect or firm enough, urges her going apart, the rather desirous to make tryal of her strength; Adam at last yields: The Serpent finds her alone; his subtle approach, first gazing, then speaking, with much flattery extolling Eve above all other Creatures. Eve wondring to hear the Serpent speak, asks how he attain'd to human speech and such understanding not till now; the Serpent answers, that by tasting of a certain Tree in the Garden he attain'd both to Speech and Reason, till then void of both: Eve requires him to bring her to that Tree, and finds it to be the Tree of Knowledge forbidden: The Serpent now grown bolder, with many wiles and arguments induces her at length to eat; she pleas'd with the taste deliberates a while whether to impart thereof to Adam or not, at last brings him of the Fruit, relates what perswaded her to eat thereof: Adam at first amaz'd , but perceiving her lost, resolves through vehemence of love to perish with her; and extenuating the trespass, eats also of the Fruit: The Effects thereof in them both; they seek to cover thir nakedness; then fall to variance and accusation of one another. The Sun was sunk, and after him the Starr Of Hesperus , whose Office is to bring Twilight upon the Earth, short Arbiter [ 50 ] Twixt Day and Night, and now from end to end Nights Hemisphere had veild the Horizon round: When Satan who late fled before the threats Of Gabriel out of Eden , now improv'd In meditated fraud and malice, bent [ 55 ] On mans destruction, maugre what might hap Of heavier on himself, fearless return'd. By Night he fled, and at Midnight return'd.

The Book of Adam and Eve, Also Called the Conflict of Adam and Eve With Satan

The story begins after Adam and Eve were expelled from the Garden of Eden. It speaks movingly of their sense of less and sorrow at the transition and the difficulty of adjusting to the world outside. It diverges significantly from the orthodox biblical account in that it gives responsibility for the dispute between Cain and Abel to jealousy over their sister. In the narrative there are also changes to which figures invent weapons of war, begin particular civilisations and drive forward the progress of man. There is also an extensive speculative genealogical section with links from Adam all the way to the hypothesised genealogy of Jesus. Malan went through a series of curacies at various parishes and maintained a lifelong theological interest, however he was particularly noted for his linguistic prowess and the reader benefits from his encyclopaedic knowledge in the form of this impressive work. Rarely has anyone accused the old testament of being dull, but this text is more filled with resurrections, beating of breasts and raw emotion as part of the familiar religious narrative.
